Why "Rosie's Heroes"?

Rosie with activity.png

Rosie’s Heroes began with a loving Indian street dog named Rosie.

Every day, she would come to check on a young child she had quietly chosen to protect and walk alongside to the local biscuit shop.  The family moved away to the U.S. and Rosie stopped coming to that street.  Neighbors assumed the worst.

A few years later, the family returned and the very next day, Rosie was back - still watching, still loyal, still remembering the child she chose to adopt.  Without missing a beat, she walked her child to the same biscuit shop, remembering the path they would take and keeping them safe from other dogs and people in the street.

But Rosie had nothing. No medical care. No reliable food. No safety. No guarantee she would live to see the next day.

And she is not alone. Across India, 60–70 million street dogs live the same reality—offering love and trust in return for hunger, disease, and, too often, cruelty.  Many are run over by cars, beaten, abused, and left to suffer for no fault of their own.  A fear of dog bites fuels blanket misconceptions about street dogs and they are left to suffer their fate instead of being treated humanely as living beings.

When we first started helping street dogs, we thought the answer was simple: rescue more, feed more, save more. But the reality on the ground was heavier. Puppies kept being born. Communities were afraid, leading to cruelty, abuse, and even mass culling. Bite incidents occurred due to overpopulation and the need to survive. And families were still losing children to rabies from unvaccinated dog bites.

If we truly care about dogs and people, we can’t just treat symptoms. We have to stabilize populations through sterilization and vaccination at scale. Rosie's Heroes grew from that realization.

Rosie's Heroes exists to replace fear with care and suffering with safety.

Rosie’s Heroes is not just focused on individual rescue but on reducing suffering at scale for dogs and people. We believe that dogs and people deserve to live in a compassionate world where every neighborhood is safe and animals are treated humanely. We partner locally to sterilize and vaccinate dogs at scale, reducing bite incidents, lowering public health costs, and stabilizing communities.

Our mission is to transform dogs who have faced hardship and trauma into brave heroes who bring joy, love, and companionship to their adopted families. Every dog deserves care, love and safety.

Rosie's Heroes is developing a scalable, data-backed sterilization and vaccination program in high-rabies countries, starting in India. The vision is simple but ambitious: drive sustained 70%+ coverage in targeted districts until rabies transmission collapses entirely.

Phase 1: Target Identification

Map high-burden districts. Establish local partnerships and define coverage baselines.

Phase 2: High-Volume Operations

Deploy mobile sterilization and vaccination units. Track sterilization progress. Build community awareness and support networks.

Phase 3: Coverage Monitoring

Maintain and verify 70%+ coverage rates. Identify and address gaps.

Phase 4: Transmission Collapse

Sustained coverage drives rabies transmission to zero in targeted districts. Replicate to additional high-burden zones and countries.

Bangalore: Direct Intervention & Public Safety

In Bangalore, a bustling tech hub, our focus is on high-volume spay/neuter campaigns coupled with the distribution of reflective collars. This strategy directly addresses the city's dense stray dog population while enhancing night-time visibility for both dogs and humans.

  • Prioritizing areas with high reported human-dog conflict.

  • Piloting community education initiatives around safe coexistence.

  • Data collection on impact of reflective collars on road accidents.

Hyderabad: Sustainable Solutions & Adoptions

Hyderabad serves as our laboratory for exploring long-term sustainability, integrating spay/neuter programs with international adoption partnerships. This site demonstrates how removing dogs from the local population can create capacity for other welfare initiatives.

  • Developing protocols for ethical international adoption logistics.

  • Collaborating with local shelters and rescue organizations.

  • Assessing the cost-effectiveness of adoption pathways versus local rehoming.

Chennai: Integrated Welfare & Community Engagement

Our Chennai site tackles the complex interplay of stray dog welfare and community needs. Alongside spay/neuter, we're implementing controlled feeding programs to improve dog health, reduce foraging, and foster positive human-animal interactions.

  • Studying the impact of managed feeding on dog health and aggression.

  • Engaging local volunteers for feeding and monitoring activities.

  • Measuring the reduction in nuisance complaints and bite incidents in treated areas.

Local Love. Global Protection.

Your adoption creates impact at home and beyond. Part of your adoption fee provides urgent medical care for local dogs in need. The rest supports large-scale spay and vaccination efforts in high-rabies regions, preventing suffering before it begins. When one dog finds a home, entire communities move closer to safety.
